CAMPAIGN 2024: Voters in Montgomery County have approved a renewal of a tax to support schools in the county.

The 3.5 millage rate tax was last renewed in 2004. It generates about $11 million annually for Montgomery Public Schools and $1.2 million for Pike Road Schools.

“MPS is incredibly grateful to the residents of Montgomery County for their overwhelming support in passing the 3.5 County Tax Millage,” Montgomery Public Schools Supt. Dr. Melvin Brown said.

“This victory is a true testament to our shared commitment to providing the best possible education for the students of Montgomery County. With this funding, we will continue to invest in our children’s future and ensure they have access to the resources and opportunities they deserve.

MPS would like to thank our County Commissioners, the City of Montgomery, our MPS employees, the Chamber of Commerce, AEA, our parents, community supporters, and everyone who supported public education today. Again, thank you to everyone who voted to support our children’s education.”

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed released this statement:

“Today, Montgomery voters once again sent a strong message that we believe in a well-funded, high-quality public school system. As a parent of students in public school, I am glad that their teachers and staff will continue to have the resources currently available to them for the next 30 years. However, I know this is still not enough to make Montgomery Public Schools the best system in the state. I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Brown, the school board, and community partners to identify ways we can better support our students and teachers succeed.”

Pike Road Schools Supt. Dr. Keith Langford released this statement:

“We are so pleased the renewal has passed! Thank you to the Pike Road and Montgomery County voters for supporting our schools and our children. We want to extend our gratitude to Superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown and his team at MPS for all of their hard work in sharing information about this renewal and to our Pike Road Town Council and Mayor Gordon Stone for their ongoing support. This decision will allow our school systems to continue moving forward!”

Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone also released a statement:

As mayor of the Town of Pike Road, it is an honor to say thank you to the citizens across Montgomery County. Your show of support for public education is greatly appreciated. Keeping this revenue for Pike Road Schools and Montgomery Public Schools will pay great dividends.”
